Health And Safety Policy
Kentish Town Cleaners Health and Safety Policy
Kentish Town Cleaners is committed to providing professional cleaning services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with cleaning activities in residential, commercial and communal premises.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and incidents arising from our work. We aim to maintain safe working conditions, provide appropriate training and equipment, and ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into all planning and operational decisions. Management is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that adequate resources are available to support it.
All employees, contractors and supervisors are required to co-operate fully with this policy, follow company procedures, and take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work.
Responsibilities
Senior management is responsible for setting overall health and safety standards, reviewing performance and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice. Managers and supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation, including conducting risk assessments, delivering training and monitoring safe working practices on site.
Employees are required to follow all safety instructions, use equipment and cleaning agents correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, report hazards and incidents promptly, and refrain from taking unnecessary risks. Contractors working on behalf of Kentish Town Cleaners must meet the same safety standards and follow all relevant procedures while on assignment.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We identify and manage health and safety risks through structured risk assessments for our cleaning tasks. These cover areas such as slips and trips, work at height for high-level cleaning, manual handling of equipment and materials, use of chemical cleaning products, and interaction with building users and the general public.
From these assessments, we develop safe systems of work that specify how tasks must be carried out, what equipment and protective measures are required, and any limitations or restrictions on activities. These safe systems are communicated to staff, reinforced through supervision and updated as necessary when conditions or methods change.
Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Kentish Town Cleaners is committed to the safe storage, handling and use of cleaning chemicals and any other hazardous substances used in our services. We ensure that products are assessed for health risks in line with applicable regulations and that staff are trained in proper dilution, application, ventilation requirements and disposal methods.
All chemicals are to be kept in their original, clearly labelled containers and stored securely when not in use. Employees must never mix chemicals unless specifically instructed by product guidelines, and must follow all safety instructions, including the use of gloves, eye protection or masks where required.
Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment and Maintenance
We provide suitable and well-maintained equipment for all cleaning tasks, including vacuum cleaners, mops, floor cleaning machinery, ladders and any specialised items. Equipment is inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be defective or unsafe.
Personal protective equipment is issued according to the risk associated with each task and may include gloves, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, masks or eye protection. Employees must use this equipment correctly, keep it in good condition, report any loss or damage and request replacement where necessary.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new employees receive induction training that covers general health and safety responsibilities, emergency arrangements, accident reporting and safe working procedures. Task-specific training is provided for specialist cleaning activities, use of machinery, work at height and handling of hazardous substances.
Ongoing refresher training is delivered as required, particularly when new equipment, products or methods are introduced. Supervisors are responsible for monitoring work practices, providing guidance on safe methods and intervening where unsafe behaviour or conditions are identified.
Manual Handling and Physical Health
The physical nature of cleaning work can present risks of strain and injury if not managed correctly. Kentish Town Cleaners promotes safe manual handling techniques, including assessing the load, planning the route, using mechanical aids where possible and team lifting for heavy or awkward objects.
Staff are encouraged to work at a steady pace, take reasonable rest breaks and report any discomfort, pain or signs of musculoskeletal problems at an early stage so that tasks can be adjusted and medical advice sought if necessary.
Slips, Trips, Falls and Work at Height
We take particular care to minimise slip and trip hazards, as these are common causes of accidents in cleaning operations. This includes the correct use of wet floor signs, prompt cleaning of spills, safe routing of cables, and maintaining good housekeeping in storage and working areas.
Work at height, including use of ladders or step ladders for high-level dusting or window cleaning, is strictly controlled. Only trained staff may carry out such work, and they must follow established procedures for ladder inspection, positioning, stability and maximum reach.
Welfare, First Aid and Emergency Procedures
We ensure that suitable welfare arrangements are in place for our staff, including access to drinking water, washing facilities and rest areas as reasonably practicable at each site. Designated first aid arrangements are communicated to staff, and appropriate first aid supplies are available.
Employees are instructed in the emergency procedures relevant to the premises they are working in, including fire evacuation routes, assembly points and reporting protocols. In the event of an emergency, the safety of people takes priority over property or cleaning tasks.
Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, near misses, hazardous conditions and work-related health issues must be reported promptly to management. These reports are recorded, investigated and reviewed to identify root causes and implement corrective actions that help prevent reoccurrence.
Management reviews health and safety performance on a regular basis, taking into account incident reports, staff feedback, regulatory changes and industry developments. This policy and related procedures are updated as necessary to ensure they remain effective, relevant and aligned with current best practice.
Policy Review and Communication
This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and made available to clients upon request. It will be reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes to our operations or to applicable regulations. Kentish Town Cleaners expects all staff, contractors and partners to support the implementation of this policy and to contribute to a culture of safety and responsibility in every cleaning environment where we operate.
